Security certificates are an important part of online safety, read more to learn about what they do and how they keep you secure online.
What are SSL Certificates?
Websites need SSL (security socket protocol) security certificates to keep user data secure, verify ownership of the website, prevent attackers from creating a fake version of the site, and convey trust to users. Each time a user visits a website, their computer reads the website certificate and checks to make sure that it is trustworthy. In order to carry out this security check, it is important that the computer has the right root certificates installed so that it knows which websites to approve.
SSL protected sites will tend to display a padlock symbol in the URL:
Websites with no SSL certificate will remain http while those with encryption will show https in people's browsers. Sites without SSL put their visitors and customers at a higher risk of having their data stolen.
